The Vaguely Rude Places Map is a simple-ish web mash up of places which, to the British sense or humour, sound vaguely rude and thus are, by definition, funny. If you're not British, it might be confusing why this is amusing.

Meanwhile, here's some blog posts which may, or may not, explain how the map came into being.

  • Ooh that sounds rude; mapping British innuendo
  • The internet seems to like the combination of maps and innuendo
  • I am not at State of the Map 2013 but there is a viral map
  • Vagamente maleducato; the Vaguely Rude Places Map goes international

Since launching, the Vaguely Rude Places map has been added to multiple times by many contributors. If you'd like to get involved, here's how.

How to Contribute
  • If you know your way around GeoJSON and GitHub, fork the map's repository, add your places (you'll find them in src/data) and submit a pull request.
  • Alternatively, open an issue, reporting as much detail as you can.
  • Otherwise, drop me an email with the details. If you don't have my email address you can find me on Twitter as @vicchi.

Since launching in February of 2013, the Vaguely Rude Places map has been Slashdotted, Farked, B3ta'd and Reddit'd multiple times, clocking up over 22M views in a single month. It's also been featured many times in the more traditional media. Here's a brief selection.
